WMU

When WMU is mentioned in the church several people have asked what it is. WMU stands for “Women’s Missionary Union.” It started back in the 1800s when women became concerned about others who had not heard the word of Jesus. They also saw the poor and needy who needed help and tried to do something for them.

Annie Armstrong was an early WMU leader and our annual offering for the North American Mission Board is named for her. Don’t forget about Lottie Moon who spent her life ministering to the people in China and for whom our annual offering to support the International Mission Board is named.

This leads to WMU in our church. There are 13 members of this group who meet the 2nd Tuesday of every month at 10 am. We pray for our missionaries and think of the needs of the less fortunate and how we can help them. In 2004 much needed supplies were sent to soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan. We keep in contact with the chaplaincy ministry at the Fluvanna Correctional Center for Women and try to help. We collect Easter baskets that go to the children of those in prison, work with nursing homes, collect Campbell labels for the Bland Ministry Center in order to help get a much-needed van, give snack packs for 1st year UVA students, collect school supplies for needy children, serve BSU dinners, prepare meals for JPBC’s midweek UVA student ministry, take meals to shut-ins, and collect Christmas shoe boxes for the Samaritan’s Purse Christmas Child program, and funds for Chaplain Services of VA.

These are just a sample of what is being done now or has happened in the past. We are not all called to go to serve in a foreign land, but we are all called to pray and do and give in our local church. In doing WMU work we need your help and support, so please be there when we ask for the church body’s support.

Thanks, Georgia Kirby – WMU Coordinator
